Dr. Carl Von Cosel A recent author of the story, Ben Harrison, describes Tanzler at this stage of his life as; "fifty years old - an imaginative, impractical inventor, scientist, electrical wizard and sometimes ingenious liar" who had "already begun to mix fact and fantasy in the search for his dream lover."

Another name he was listed with is Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel or Karl Tänzler. In 1940, he was arrested and detained. Year 1927. While working at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida, Count Carl Von Cosel (real name: Carl Tanzler) fell in love with a beautiful 22-year old patient, Elena Hoyos. She died soon after, but this didn't deter Tanzler. He ended up stealing her body from her mausoleum and taking it to his home where he strung her bones together with wire and used wax and cloth to replace her Ez Carl Tanzler (illetve Count Carl von Cosel), aki a 20-as években Amerikába emigrált német orvos volt (legalábbis ezt állította magáról).

He grew up in Imperial Germany, where he had an unremarkable childhood nonetheless. He had interests and hobbies such as science, astronomy and generally building and inventing things.

In the 1920’s, Carl Tanzler (later known as Carl von Cosel) emigrated from Germany to the the Florida Keys, in the United States, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters. Tanzer had worked as an x-ray technician and inventor in Germany, barely making enough to get by, but upon arrival in the US, he claimed to be a former submarine skipper and owner of nine college degrees.
